Importance of Crack Sealing

Asphalt crack sealing is a crucial maintenance practice in the maintenance of asphalt pavements, such as roads, parking lots, and driveways. It involves sealing cracks in asphalt surfaces to prevent water infiltration, the intrusion of foreign materials, and the subsequent deterioration of the pavement structure. Here are some key reasons highlighting the importance of asphalt crack sealing:

1. Prevents Water Damage: Water is one of the primary factors that contribute to the deterioration of asphalt surfaces. When water penetrates through cracks in the pavement, it can reach the underlying base and subbase layers, leading to erosion and weakening of the structural integrity of the pavement. Crack sealing creates a waterproof barrier, preventing water from infiltrating and causing damage.

2. Prevents Freeze-Thaw Damage: In regions with cold climates, water that seeps into pavement cracks can freeze during winter. The expansion of frozen water can further widen the cracks and cause additional damage. By sealing the cracks, the entry of water is minimized, reducing the potential for freeze-thaw damage.

3. Enhances Longevity: Regular crack sealing extends the lifespan of asphalt pavements. By addressing cracks early on, before they evolve into more significant issues, property owners and municipalities can avoid costly repairs and premature pavement failure.

4. Minimizes Oxidation and UV Damage: Asphalt is vulnerable to oxidation and damage from ultraviolet (UV) rays. Crack sealing helps to prevent air and sunlight exposure to the underlying asphalt layers, minimizing oxidation and protecting the pavement from the harmful effects of UV radiation.

5. Prevents Vegetation Growth: Unsealed cracks can serve as entry points for seeds and organic matter, leading to the growth of vegetation within the pavement causing additional damage. Crack sealing helps create a barrier against the intrusion of vegetation, maintaining a smoother and more durable pavement surface.

6. Reduces Maintenance Costs: The cost of crack sealing is relatively low compared to the expenses associated with major pavement repairs or reconstruction. Timely crack sealing helps avoid more extensive and costly interventions, contributing to overall cost savings in the long run.

7. Improves Safety: Cracks in the pavement can create uneven surfaces and pose safety hazards for pedestrians and vehicles. By sealing cracks, the pavement remains smoother, reducing tripping hazards and improving the overall safety of the road or parking lot.

Hot pour crack sealing is an indispensable element of pavement maintenance, and ARIES Construction's commitment to utilizing state-of-the-art equipment and high-quality materials ensures the longevity and resilience of asphalt surfaces. By employing a tailored approach to prepping and application options, ARIES Construction delivers superior results, protecting infrastructure and optimizing the lifespan of paved surfaces.

Our Process

Prepping Options:

1. Routing:

Specialized equipment is used to cut a reservoir along the crack. This allows for better adhesion and ensures the sealant penetrates deeper into the crack.

2. Blowing:

Removal of dirt, debris, and moisture from the crack using high-pressure air, ensuring optimal adhesion of the sealant.

3. Hot Air Lancing:

Application of high-temperature air to the crack to remove moisture and enhance adhesion.

4. Combination:

ARIES Construction evaluates each project individually and may employ a combination of prepping options based on the specific needs of the pavement.

Application Options:

1. Flush Fill:

The sealant is applied level with the pavement surface, providing a smooth and inconspicuous finish.

2. Overband Widths:

ARIES Construction offers flexibility in finishing options by using different disks attached to the application wand. This allows for variations in overband widths, catering to the specific requirements of each project.

3. Blotting Agents:

Applying a blotting agent in high traffic zones following crack sealant application accelerates the curing process of the sealant but also minimizes the risk of vehicles  carrying residual sealant onto adjacent roadways. By reducing the potential for tracking, the blotting agent contributes to the overall durability and longevity of the crack sealant application.
